Gastritis

Gastritis is an inflammation of the stomach lining, which can only be determined through a gastroscopy. This becomes visible as inflammatory, reddened and swollen mucosa.

The bacterium called Helicobacter pylori can be found as a frequent cause of this disease. This bacterium can also contribute to the development of ulcers in the stomach or duodenum, or cause a special form of stomach cancer (MALT-lymphoma).

Gastroscopy allows taking tissue samples (biopsy), which can be screened for the presence of the bacteria. If the bacterium is detected, the gastritis can be cured by a treatment with antibiotics.
